I am totally convinced that meditation will lead to weight loss faster than exercise.
Years ago I would have argued with myself. "What? Meditation burns no calories. I could be running, doing situps, ANYTHING that burns the fat besides sitting still breathing. " I would have been wrong and if you are arguing with me in your head you are too. Sorry friend but I'm totally sold on this meditation stuff.
Here is why.... if you are overweight the chances that you are eating mindlessly are 99.99999% possible. Meditation brings mindfulness. Yes, I meditated for a while before this started clicking for me. That is why I believe that if you know you are meditating with the goal of weight loss your results will increase. If you set an intention of learning mindful eating as part of your meditation practice this will reprogram your brain faster and thus faster results.
Here is how....just be still. Okay, that is an oversimplification. There are a million blogs and books and videos on meditation. I recommend skipping all the passive activity of filling your brain with how to do something and instead do the massive activity of DOING THE THING! Well besides reading this blog, haha. Create a little cozy spot that you can use each time you meditate. Sit down. I use the app Insight Timer because I like the relaxing guitar music that it plays and the little bell that dings at the beginning and end of your timer. Then just start breathing and paying attention to the way your breath feels going in and out. Most of us never even recognize whether we are breathing or not. You can count your breath, you can attach a word to your breath (I personally love to attach love or freedom because those are the two things I most want to embody). Every time your mind goes to a thought gently reign it back in. Don't be mad at yourself that you can't sit without thinking, that just leads to more thinking. We are trying to be completely present to the moment. It's a practice! You have to practice to improve anything.
Here is how to translate that to eating...... when you sit down to a meal take a couple of breaths before inhaling your food. Maybe bless your food. Take in the sight of what you are eating. If possible be mindful about preparing your plate, make it look pretty. Then pay attention to what you are putting in your mouth. Really enjoy. If you are eating something you don't love but it's healthy, tell yourself how you are fueling your body with nutrients. If nothing else just be mindful the entire time you are eating. When you are satisfied STOP EATING! Honor the signals your body is giving you.
Do you now see why I think meditation is a necessity for weight loss?
